The Global Initiative for Women’s Just Climate Finance, launched by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Sofia University, the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW), and the Green Transition Forum, aims to ensure fair and inclusive access to climate finance for women worldwide. This innovative project seeks to address existing inequalities in climate policy and finance by placing women at the center of sustainable development.
One of the initiative’s primary goals is to highlight the critical role of women in climate action and to promote gender equality at all levels of decision-making. Women are often among the most vulnerable groups affected by climate change, yet they also serve as leaders, innovators, and advocates for sustainability. Despite this, their access to climate finance and participation in strategic processes remains limited.
The project calls for gender-balanced representation in governance and leadership structures, promoting the joint participation of women and men in institutional management to foster more effective and equitable decision-making. It also supports the creation of programs that empower women in economic and leadership roles through training, mentorship, and access to financial resources.
Since its launch, the initiative has gained the support of 15 international organizations that share its vision for equality and sustainable development. Its main objective is to mobilize broad international engagement ahead of COP30, which will take place in Brazil. This involves partnerships among governments, NGOs, businesses, and academic institutions working together to drive tangible change.
The initiative emphasizes women as leaders, entrepreneurs, and key agents in the sustainable development process. Their contributions not only stimulate economic growth but also lead to fairer and more durable solutions in addressing climate challenges. Women play a particularly vital role in local communities—especially in developing countries—where they often lead adaptation efforts and manage natural resources sustainably.
Equal access to climate finance is a core theme of the initiative. It underscores that providing financial resources to women not only reduces poverty but also strengthens their economic independence. This is a crucial step toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on gender equality, social inclusion, and the transition to a green economy.
International participants in the initiative share best practices and success stories demonstrating how barriers to women’s participation in various sectors can be overcome. These include innovative financing models, sustainable business practices, and strategies for addressing climate challenges. Such examples not only inspire but also provide practical, replicable solutions at a global scale.
The initiative actively promotes multi-stakeholder participation, involving governments, businesses, civil society, and individual activists. Through forums, conferences, and educational programs, it raises public awareness about the importance of climate finance and encourages wider engagement. Additionally, new resources and tools are being developed to facilitate access to financial mechanisms and improve information sharing.
The Global Initiative for Women’s Just Climate Finance is not only a step toward gender equality but also a powerful driver of sustainable development. It highlights the necessity of integrating women into all aspects of climate action and ensuring equal access to resources. Through international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the creation of sustainable policies, the initiative has the potential to generate real, lasting change in the global fight against climate change.
